Creative and Performing Arts

Talent needs to be nurtured, encouraged and allowed to flourish. There are many opportunities at the School for students to pursue their interests in the creative disciplines within and beyond the curriculum. We are known for our exceptionally high standards in music, drama, art, photography and creative writing.

Whether it be playing an instrument, singing or performing in productions, our music and drama departments provide our pupils with opportunities to develop their talents, both on stage and behind the scenes.

The music programme is varied, and offers opportunities to students of all ages and musical abilities. With various instrumental ensembles, an orchestra, swing band and junior and senior choirs, there is an enviable breadth as well as sustained commitment from the students.

Drama productions take place each term. The main school play or musical in the autumn is supported by GCSE and A-Level theatre studies performances in the spring term. An ‘Arts Evening’ at the end of the summer term mixes music and drama, primarily from the younger years, with stunning displays of students’ work from GCSE and Advanced level art and photography.

All pupils are encouraged to develop and explore their artistic talents through imagination and experimentation. Opportunities to gain confidence and critical awareness are given through use of a wide variety of disciplines such as drawing, painting, designing, sculpture, photography (digital and darkroom), clay, casting and printing. The History of Art, trends and issues, are key to understanding why Art has such a powerful influence in our world today. For this reason, pupils explore and research these areas to help create and influence their own masterpieces. Pupils enjoy their time in the Department and, through Art, become independent, critical and analytical thinkers of their world around them.
